Leeds’ Victoria Quarter is a one of a kind and very unique shopping centre in the heart of the North. Housed within elegant Grade 2 listed buildings it is known as the Knightsbridge of the North and a cheap hotel in Leeds will enable you to take full advantage of the high end shops which are housed here. The history of the buildings here is an interesting one and many years ago these shops were a far cry from the way they appear today! During the Victorian era the area was home to many slaughterhouses, butchers and fruit and vegetable retailers. Some parts of the current County Arcade housed haberdashery and fancy goods stores. The buildings were turned into an elaborate arcade by the famous architect Frank Matcham who used rich gilded mosaics, carved mahogany and wrought iron to create a splendid and beautiful home for many retailers. By the late 1980s however, the arcade was in serious decline and it was realised that the wonderful architecture and fittings were under threat. It was then that a painstaking restoration programme began and the arcades were returned to their former glory and also improved by some carefully chosen modern innovations such as an amazing stained glass roof and beautiful new floor mosaics.
Within the development are designer stores such as Lois Vuitton, Paul Smith and Vivienne Westwood and of course the famous Harvey Nichols which is world renowned for its high end goods. Cheap Leeds Hotels close by will be very convenient for checking out these famous designers and their wares!
